Welcome to our Screening Room!

Learn about elephant seals and why they are called sentinels of the sea by The Marine Mammal Center just north of San Francisco. Wildlife & Animal Documentaries Unleashed has fun with creating fiction based on fact about these playful pinnipeds. Enjoy this gangsta pup rapping about life at the rookery.

ELEPHANT SEALS

Elephant seals live up to their name by their stature, they are the Hum 3 of the sea (but less damaging to the ozone layer). They also make a noise that certainly rivals the trumpeting of a land elephant. Unlike elephants, the male elephant seals grow into their nose and noise that they make. What starts off as an alarmingly high pitch screech as a pup, develops into a low, bass noise that sounds like a bubbling belch (a little gross, but the best way I can think of how to describe the sound in words).

Trivia: The shrill sound of the Nazgžl (The Nine) aka The Black Riders in Lord of the Rings was actually the elephant seal pup shriek taken up an octave. (You can read my archived film review).

When I imagined what these vocal pups might say, I thought they might rap about the woes they faced during the two years that it takes them to reach maturity and the common challenges they would encounter trying to survive at the rookery (where the marine mammals reside on land).

Vocabulary: Seals, sea lions, and walruses are pinnipeds, a feather-footed marine mammal.

This information is the product of my interview with vet tech, Deb Wickham at The Marine Mammal Center. Here are some other websites to check out to learn more about these marine mammals and how you can help increase their survival rate:
